MSA Tutoring: 3 Ways to Make the Most of a Tutoring Session

Tutors can be expensive and the last thing you want to do before assessment is due is waste your time. Here are our top three tips on how to maximise value on a tutoring session, from the student’s perspective.

1. Tell the tutor what you want to learn.

Before you book a tutor, decide what you really need help with. Is it an assignment, is it a concept or are you preparing for an exam? Really understand what you want to get out of that session and then tell or ask the tutor if they can help with that specific thing. E.g. “Are you familiar with concept?” or “In this session I want to go through A, B and C”.

Then organise the session far enough in advance that the tutor has time to prepare and a second session is possible if needed.

2. Ask the tutor to book a space for you

Tell the tutor you want to meet somewhere specific. Perhaps you feel more comfortable at a cafe or you need a quieter space to concentrate. Whatever you feel most comfortable with, let your tutor know so they can organise a space in advance.

3. Recap and ask questions

At the end of the session, recap anything you’re not clear with. Say “I believe we went through X” or “I’m a little bit unsure on X, can we go through it again” and ask questions throughout the session. If you don’t understand something, ask your tutor to explain it again.

That’s it! Sign up to MSA Tutoring today and Happy Studying!
