The MSA has been working hard to alleviate the increasing cost of living pressures students have been experiencing. Part of this work includes expanding existing welfare initiatives and creating new ones.

We understand that often public transport is inaccessible, can add time to your journey and at times is unaffordable.

To try remove as many barriers as possible and to ensure you can still engage with your education, the MSA has partnered with PTV to become an eligible issuer of 7-Day Travel Passes.

How it Works

From Monday the 29th of April, students experiencing financial hardship can apply for travel assistance through the MSA Travel Pass Program.

An MSA issued Travel Pass will provide you with 7 days of free travel on trains, buses and trams state wide - ensuring you can get to where you need, when you need.

This program is currently in a trial period. The MSA will use this trial period to assess demand and the continued feasibility of the program.

FAQs

1) How do I use the Travel Pass?

Students must always carry the Travel Pass when traveling on public transport or entering a compulsory ticket area. To use the pass, simply:

  • show the Travel Pass to a barrier attendant when entering or leaving a compulsory ticket area through a staffed ticket barrier at a railway station.
  • show the Travel Pass to the driver on buses and coaches.

2) What modes of public transport can I use the Travel Pass on?

Students can use their Travel Pass on all PTV contracted public transport services within Victoria including:

  • any metropolitan bus, train, and tram service (zone 1 and 2).
  • regional town and intertown bus (myki and non-myki enabled) services.
  • V/Line coaches and trains (economy class only) services.

3) Can I apply for another Travel Pass?

Students are welcome to apply for another Travel Pass, however due to the limited number of passes available, MSA may prioritise students who have not previously received a Travel Pass before.

4) How long is my Travel Pass valid for?

MSA Travel Passes commence on the date you have requested and are valid for 7-days including that date.

5) Where can I collect my Travel Pass?

Once you have received an approval email, you can collect your Travel Pass from the MSA Recreational Library (SURLY) on Level 1 of the Campus Centre during their opening hours.

6) Can I collect my Travel Pass outside of the times indicated in the email?

Yes, please email msa-library@monash.edu to make alternate arrangements.

Unfortunately, due to the limited availability of passes during this trial and the high anticipated volume of applications, we will be unable to accommodate every request.

Please ensure you have allowed sufficient time for your application to be assessed, we recommend submitting your application at least 7 working days prior to when you require the Travel Pass.

Applications will be assessed on a case by case basis and priority will be given to those who haven’t applied before.
